Beckton Riverside Phase 1 is a major regeneration project being delivered by the Berkeley Group on the former Beckton Gasworks site in Newham. The development will deliver 2,900 homes, 5,000 sqm of retail and commercial space, new community facilities, extensive public realm improvements, and a 400-metre riverside park along the Thames. The wider Beckton Riverside masterplan forms part of one of London’s largest regeneration areas and has the potential to deliver approximately 10,000 homes.

Rovia staff, David Bird and Marcus Della Croce, have advised on the transport strategy for the scheme for several years, supporting negotiations with Transport for London, the London Borough of Newham, and the Greater London Authority. The project places sustainable movement at its core, with a car-free approach that prioritises walking, cycling, and public transport while ensuring efficient servicing arrangements.

Rovia has also helped secure a package of off-site sustainable transport improvements, including active travel enhancements identified through Healthy Streets, new offsite pedestrian and cycle crossings, and contributions towards public transport infrastructure including the DLR to support both the development and the wider community.

It received a resolution to grant in late 2025 by London Borough of Newham but has since been called in by the Mayor and was approved in September 2026 by the Mayor of London.
